Pre-Arrival to the Playa

Arrival on the Playa

Where is the Duck Pond Camp?

Cars and Camping

  • We are going to have a lot of people at our camp. There will be someone there to show you where to park and where you can set up your tent. If no one is available, you may be asked to move your car/tent later. See below for details.
  • If you arrive at night, you'll need to put your car in the temporary camping area, which the fine people at the gate can direct you to. Park there, and come find the camp. We'll place your car and tent in the morning, when things make much more sense on the playa.

Where do I park my car?

  • Cars will be parked along the perimeter of the camp. A line across the back of the camp and along one side. They will double as a barrier and camp boundary.
  • Place a tarp or pan under your car if it is leaking any fluids. Protect the playa.

Where do I set up my tent?

  • We have two large shade structures for you to camp under. You will likely get a plot for your tent under one of these. More on this later.
  • Secure your tent well. Use extra long stakes or 18" rebar. Expect high winds.
  • Cover any rebar with tennis balls, empty plastic bottles ... impaling is bad.
  • If any part of your tent is open to the air, including mosquito netting, you _will_ get dust all over the interior. Use duct tape to close the vents with a flap when you're not inside.

Where is everything? i.e. Camp Layout

  • We'll post this info when we have it as well..

The Zam Zam Bar Space

Summary
The 30' x 20' tent structure is the home of general Duck Pond bar activity during the day, which is then transformed into Zam Zam after dinner.

During the day
During daylight hours, it is a covered public social space containing our bar [aka source of booze] and main sound. It is utilized in conjunction with the slip-n-slide to have a good-n-wet daytime party.

At Night
After dinner, when Zam Zam proper opens, it will become a dim-red lit lounge with a classy-but-yet-divey feel to it with a soundtrack of cool lounge, downtempo, trip-hop, spy jazz and classic jazz. James Bond would fit in there.

Privileges and Responsibilities

  • Anybody can tend bar at any time. Some people have had a ton of fun tending bar at burningman and can't wait to do it again. Feel free to try it out.
  • Playa Specials: These are mixed with half a can of Hansen's and two shots of vodka.
  • If you're the last one left watching the bar late at night, you must either shut it down or find somebody else to take over before you leave [whether you're going to bed or another party]. We'll put in a switch which will kill the lights [and sound?] to make shutting it down easy.
  • If you find the bar closed upon returning to camp at any hour, you are welcome to reopen it. Just flip that master switch and it should come back to life.
  • If the default Zam Zam soundscape doesn't suit you while you're holding down the fort at night, you are welcome to change it. However, keep in mind that we are trying to keep a fairly consistent vibe for the space so repeat visitors will get what they came back for. Leave things like high energy beats and angry rock to the sound camps that do it better anyway.

Electricity

As you may have noticed, our camp will be consuming a lot of electricity which in turn comes from gasoline. We will be powering everything from our lighting, to our sound systems, to our signage. We are asking that everyone brings gasoline to help with the camps needs. This can come in two forms. The first being, bring gasoline in an approved gas container, or, fill up your tank at the last stop in Gerlach. This will ensure that we all can get through the week with enough power. If you have any questions, please ask John.

Alcohol

The Duck Pond will be providing a great deal of alcohol for the camp, but everyone is encouraged to donate one bottle to the bar along with a mixer (which can be harder to come by than Alcohol at times). Remember, we are a high profile camp therefore will have a lot of customers.

What we will be providing:

  • 60+ handles of Vodka
  • Hansens carbonated mixers for the Playa Specials (Kiwi Strawberry, Raspberry, and Mandarin Lime)
  • Pickle juice for the Pickle-tini's
  • A few kegs
  • 60 cases of beer

Minors at BRC:
If you are tending bar, be aware of the following message from the head honchos at Burning Man:

"Last year local law enforcement investigated under age drinking at our event... We never believed that there was a rampant problem with underage drinking at Burning Man. We are happy to report that there were no reported incidents with law enforcement and no citations or fines for serving minors. To ensure that we achieve the same results this year we are putting out the same list of things you should be aware of regarding Nevada laws on under age drinking...

Our recommendations -

1. Use good common sense when serving alcohol. 2. Understand your prerogative to serve someone and carefully consider your options with people who look less than 21. 3. Have an extra person from your camp present while serving alcohol to act as a witnesses, just in case. 4. Don't get minors drunk. That just isn't cool."

Also, if you are unsure if someone is of age, ask. Anyone working with law enforcement will have to tell you the truth, and this helps cover your back.

Evening Cabaret/Open Mic

When: Every night from 10p to 4am
Every evening we will host an Open Mic/Cabaret on the Zam Zam Stage. If you are or know a musical act, DJ, Performer, Magician, Comedian, etc. please have them stop by and sign up for a time slot on the sign-up sheet (please - no spoken word). If you are planning to be around in the bar for the evening please have someone train you on the sound equipment before using it. See Brandon, John or Amanda.

Slip N Slide

To run it

  • Get the slide wet using the large sprayers
  • Pre-spray people who are dry or drying off with the small sprayer
  • Add water and a splash of soap to the sprayers as needed

Clean up?

  • Squeegee the surface as needed
  • In the morning use a broom and sweep off all the dust
